the other weekend
we decided to head to skagit valley
to see the tulips
before they were all done blooming.
we drove and drove around the area
and saw very few tulip fields.
we came upon one large field
that was swarming with people
and cars
and no place to park.
so we kept driving.
we happened upon a daffodil field
with just a few cars parked
along the side of the road.
score!
and we figured that would be it.
yet again, another sweet sweet
spring break trip.
off to the tulip fields to see...
daffodils.
no tulips.
(no offense to the beautiful daffodils,
of course.)
on a sunny day that was freezing cold.
and windy.
oh, spring break,
darn you!
but lo and behold,
we stumbled upon tulip town!
phew!
spring break tulip visit saved!
so many beautiful colors.
i wanted to lay down and make
tulip angels in all of the rows.
we decided to walk down an entire row.
and all was going well until we realized...
oops.
but no flowers were picked.
so we were only half naughty.
now you may have been wondering.
tulip town?
really?
yep. really.
a freakin' disneyland of tulips.
wagon rides around, uh, the parking lot?
around the area we could see
standing in one place?
"and off to our left, you'll see...
where you just were
when you paid to get on this wagon."
there was shopping up the wing wang,
with face painting and photo booths
and art and clothing and kites
and lots of overpriced foodstuffs
for your tulip town dining pleasure.
and all with giganto lines.
one lady was so excited she was
hollering to her kids,
"over here! there's music!"
i thought,
"hmmm...live music?
maybe some sort of oom pah pah band?
i'll check it out."
it was recorded music
coming from the windmill.
aaahhh. tourist season.
but heck,
it could have been worse.
we could have had to sit in
stinky hot pools
with a bunch of half-naked strangers
in the 30 degree weather
while it was snowing,
right?
