"these steroids just taste like a strong finger taste."
"if you're going to fight, it has to be to the death."
"no, i don't want you to touch me with your butt finger."
one of these was spoken by my husband. any guesses which one?

THIS IS WHAT 9 LOOKS LIKE
my oldest is 9.
nine!
his last year in single digits.
his last year in the primary grades.
nine means a little bit later bedtime.
and an extra chore added to the list.
nine means a bit more homework.
and more expections.
but nine is awesome!
nine is still a sweet, handsome guy
who loves life.
who loves to be home and to play.
play legos.
play wii.
play ds.
play anything involving his vast assortment of pretend weaponry.
nine is obsessed with star wars,
and legos
and wii
and ds.
nine loves to swim
and practice martial arts.
and loves to play imaginary games
and baseball.
and laugh at slapstick and potty humor.
nine is a loyal friend and
loving brother (when he's not kicking the crud out of the other brother).
nine is a rule-follower
and a responsible student
and positive role model.
nine is silly and funny and super smart.
and inquisitive and enthusiastic.
nine is a traveler and a reader and a snuggler.
and serious and thoughtful and full of dreams and ideas and theories.
nine is at his happiest when he's home with his family,
playing and talking and laughing.
nine is still our boonarooni and cheese,
and our special guy
and we are so so proud of who he is and who he is becoming.

BOY QUOTES: A RECENT COMPILATION
1. hudson saw me swinging at the playground after school the other day. i was pretty high (but only for moment. then i had to completely stop before i puked. even swinging makes me dizzy in my old age). he said to me,
"mom, you're one of the best swingers in our family!"
thank you, my boy. that means a lot, on so many levels.
2. i overheard a conversation between the boys recently. it went something like this:
hudson: i wanna get rich so i get buy a lot of stuff.
boon: you’ll have to do a lot of yard work.
hudson: i don’t want to get money like that. i just want to go to the bank.
boon: the bank is for getting money when you really need it.
3. here's an anecdote wyatt shared with me:
the boys were in their halloween costumes, returning from a party at wyatt's office. he wanted to stop at a hardware store on the way home, but boon didn't want to be in his luigi costume in public. hudson suggested he take his green shirt and hat off and just wear his overalls.
boon's reply:
it's not safe to not wear a shirt at the hardware store, especially if you're looking at nails!"
aah, yes. i believe i've read that on a sign at the entrance to home depot.

HERE ARE THE BOYS...
stepping up the spook factor.

the story: last year, boon really really really wanted headstones in the yard.
mom really really really isn't a fan of headstones,
but childhood is short, wouldn't you say?
so...we got headstones.
this year, boon really really really wanted a skeleton to add to his headstones.
mom really really really isn't a fan of skeletons.
but childhood is short.
so...we got a skeleton.
and the boys spent a good hour on a sunday creating their spooky halloween vignette.
and this mom can admit that it turned out pretty darn good.
