5 UNTIL 5

this photo was taken of my baby
5 days before he turned 5 (which was today).
5 until 5 we called it.
and then the countdown began,
4 until 5,
3 until 5,
you get the idea.

i remember when boon hit 5.
it was hard for me.
my baby was no longer a baby,
or a toddler,
or even a preschooler.
he was a kid.
and i feel the same way this time with hudson.
where has the time gone?
the crazy, beautiful, happy, exhausting,
nutty, frustrating, ugly, lucky, hilarious,
wondering, amazing time?
we are dawning on a new age in our household.
and as sad as i am,
i will embrace it.
after all, this is one amazingly awesome kid
and i can't wait to see what is still to come.
i love you, big 5 guy!

15 YEARS OF WEDDED BLISTERS

ok, no blisters, but bliss?
who really says that
unless they are being sarcastic?
bliss is not the right word.
rockin' good times? sure
crazy-ass business? sure
sweet sweet life davis style? yup.
it's been a lucky, lucky life for us two spring chickens.
lucky.
we had a great dinner and movie date to celebrate.
complete with this totally centered and oh so flattering self-portrait.
and i think the babysitter cost more than our food and entertainment.
but it's all good.

and now that hudson has learned what an anniversary is,
when he and i played indiana jones legos,
there was a wedding,
where a guy who looked like indy but wasn't,
and a girl who looked like marion but wasn't,
got married,
and then kissed and hugged and danced
while others watched on.
there was the surfer kid from the motorhome,
and the guy with the turban,
and the policeman,
and don't forget the anakin/indy hybrid guy.
good times.

BOOK REVIEW: FABLEHAVEN

fablehaven, by brandon mull,
has been sitting on my bedside table
for a while now.
i had other stuff to read.
and quite honestly, the cover kinda turned me off.
creepy, you know?
but i finally went through all of my other reading material,
so i decided to give this a try.
it was recommended by my mother in law,
so it might be good, right?
well, i quickly got into it and couldn't put it down!
i finished in a few days and went to the bookstore
for book 2 in the series.
didn't want to wait for amazon to ship it to me.
and i can't put this one down, either.
it's sorta harry potteresque.
the world of mythical, magical creatures and whatnot,
with a young boy and girl at the forefront of the story.
one of those books for kids/young adults that is
totally appealing to all ages.
an extremely imaginative world, a quick read,
and a total escape.
can't wait for the boys to be old enough to read these
together as a family.

APOLOGY FOR THE FUTURE

dear oldest son,

today was a day like most days.
a fine day.
a great day.
but years from now,
when you look back at your school photos,
you will no doubt discover,
yet again,
that your mom wasn't perfect.
that she made mistakes.
that she forgot things.
things like school picture day.
so when you look at your school photos,
years from now,
please know that,
yes, you needed a haircut.
and yes, your shirt was too small.
and yes, i had to dig your pants out of the hamper
because i desperately needed to do your laundry.
but also know that i love you.
and regardless of how your crazy photos turn out,
i will think you look great.
maybe i'll think you need a haircut,
and i'll think your shirt was too small,
and your pants could have been cleaner,
but mostly, i will think you look cute
and adorable and handsome.
i hope you can forgive me,
in the future,
when you look at your school photos.

PROJECT KITCHEN MOJO, DAY ONE

i'm attempting to recapture my mojo in the kitchen.
it's been a while.
a long while.
not sure why i'm inspired.
maybe it's the spring weather.
the abundance of beautiful strawberries at the market.
the promise of summer fruit to come.
the planting of fruits and veggies in the yard.
or maybe it's the fact that the boys have recently discovered they like salad.
regardless, i'm at least trying to add a bit of pep to our nightly meal.
and who is helping?
why, none other than the folks at martha stewart's everyday food magazine.

5 meals from one shopping list.

tonight was day number one: chicken tostada salad.

and the results are in:

boon: "really good, especially the crunchy, cheesy tortilla."

hudson: "yeah, it was good."

mom: "delicious!"

dad: "restaurant quality."

and to give the hubby some props...when he arrived home from work,
i had the table set with the tostadas already plated.
he said,
"wow, what a pretty dinner."
major props to this man.

TEAMWORK

we're all about teamwork in this family.
and i love that the boys want to be part of dad's team,
no matter what he is doing.
i'm so in love with these three guys!

A LITTLE BIT OF OUTPUT

just a few layouts i've done lately.
they seem quite full of junk...i mean goodies.
i think i'm in a 'slather the doodads on' kind of mood.
but i also feel like i'm in a bit of a funk.
lots of strips of paper.
lots of doodads.
need some inspiration.
shake things up a bit.
keep working towards finding my style.
keep experimenting.
whether or not these are my favorite layouts,
i feel so happy that i've preserved these memories.
scrapbooking rocks. it really does.

MOTHER'S DAY AT PRESCHOOL

i love mother's day at preschool.
hudson invited me to a mother's day tea.
with no tea.
but lots of lemonade.
and fruit and cookies.
and a little play.
he was brown bear.
and what did he see?
"a red bird looking at me!"
there was also a performance.
a song, 'popcorn popping on the apricot tree'.
i'm in love with this cute song.
and the cute boy singing the cute song,
and giving me lots of hugs and kisses.
and the cute flower pot the cute boy painted for me.
and the drawing of me with a butterfly and a rainbow
to keep me company, he said.

during the tea, hudson said,
"isn't it great out here?"
and
"i sure wish daddy and boon were here."

i love mother's day at preschol.

BOOK FAIRS MAKE ME HAPPY

took the boys to the
elementary school book fair today.
i loved the book fair as a kid.
so cool to have the bookstore
come to the library.
so it's always fun to take my boys.
this one was buy 1, get 1 free,
so we got quite a pile.

when we got home, they both grabbed a book
and started reading.
i love when this happens.
makes me super happy.

bet you can't guess which book was my choice?

UNREASONABLE

hudson was soooo mad at me the other morning.
and why?
because i told him no, he and boon and i
could not
take a shower together later.
apparently my desire for privacy is
VERY UNREASONABLE.
